Providing a community for artists to meet and share their love of art

Equal-Opportunity Community of Visual Artists.

Seattle CoArts is an equal-opportunity community of visual artists. Each of our members is enriched by our diverse talents and experiences. As such we strive to encourage an arts community that embraces the many aspects of our identities. Seattle CoArts supports inclusion, diversity and equality

Our History and Objectives

Seattle CoArts was founded in 1949 by a small group of artists led by Margaret Mattocks as the founding president. They gathered regularly to paint together. In 1950 under the guidance of Judge Evangeline Starr, the group incorporated as a non-profit educational organization.

Today we have over 150 members and continue to provide a forum for artists to meet and expand their love of art. Seattle Co-Arts embodies the original objectives of the group:

  1. To encourage creativity and artistic development
  2. To offer educational opportunities
  3. To present member’s work to the public
  4. To encourage community interest in the arts
  5. To cooperate with other organizations to promote art appreciation

Seattle Co-Arts provides its membership with a wide variety of programs throughout the year.
Our educational program includes Spring and Fall local 2-day workshops and a June retreat-style, 5-day workshop at Samish Island. All workshops are instructed by well-known professional artists.

There is also a 5-day Fall Paint-Out at Samish Island that  is self-directed and in the company of your inspiring artist friends.

At monthly meetings, we feature demonstrations and presentations by regionally and nationally known artists.
Other resources include an extensive library of art books, videos and DVDs that are available to all members.

A monthly demonstration and/or presentations by known artists at our general meetings.

Each year Seattle Co-Arts presents a juried show. This annual exhibition is open to all members who have achieved juried status. The juried show reflects the high quality, and wide range of styles and mediums within its membership.

Members will receive a monthly newsletter, attend meetings, participate in Painting of the month, and attend workshops and paint outs.

The artists in the membership reflect a wide range of painting styles, subject matter, medium and technique. While many members are active in the greater arts community with award- winning work in national and international collections, Seattle Co-Arts recognizes the importance of nurturing artists in all stages of their development. Creativity, imagination  are valued here.
